| Student aid: When it comes to applying for government assistance to help pay for an education, Michael Lee-Chin takes the cake. Raised by his Avon lady mother and grocery store clerk father in a Jamaican household of nine kids, Lee-Chin had to finance his own schooling. Cleaning the engine room on the Jamaica Queen cruise ship helped him put away enough money for one year at Hamilton's McMaster University. The rest was raised with a pen. Lee-Chin wrote Jamaica's prime minister to request assistance completing his civil engineering studies and received a scholarship for his bold act. Today, the self-made millionaire is the chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. |
